At the center of the enchanting rolling meadows, lived a boy named Shepherd. His being was essentially unadulterated, simple, and honest. His main role was mainly to look after his herd of sheep.

Their soft bleating and the whispering of the gales through the lone tree on the peak were his only co-dwellers. Day in day, looking out for his charges instilled in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.

Yet, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. In one such instance out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome plan.

Stories of wolves hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a prank on the villagers.

One day he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but found nothing threatening.

The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank continued for a few here days more. Yet, one morning, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to receive a lesson on honesty and the results of dishonesty.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
